A suspect in the ambush killing of Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer was arrested early Monday .
Ryan Clinkunbroomer was a sheriff’s deputy who was shot and killed in an ambush while sitting in his patrol car at a red light. On Monday morning.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said investigators are “extremely confident” they have the right person in custody. Even with that confidence, Luna urged anyone with information to contact authorities to assist in the investigation.
Luna said no other people were being sought. Luna identified the suspect as 29-year-old Palmdale resident Kevin Salazar. Salazar was taken into custody at the Palmdale Sheriff’s Office.
“Thirty-six hours after our deputies were killed, the men and women of our department arrested him earlier this morning,” Luna said.
Agents surrounded the residence, a home, and called everyone inside Monday night. Family members left the home, Luna said, but the man remained rooted inside for hours. In an attempt to calm the situation and negotiate, Special Enforcement agents applied chemical agents and the suspect surrendered.
Information from community members led homicide investigators to identify the suspect and locate the vehicle used in the murder, Luna said. The motive has not yet been determined, Luna said. The investigation was ongoing.
The day of the tragedy…
At 6 p.m., the uniformed deputy was on duty, working a patrol car out of the Palmdale sheriff’s station, the sheriff said. He said a good citizen found the officer unconscious in his vehicle near the intersection and contacted authorities. The deputy was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to Luna.
Surveillance video from the sheriff’s station shows the moment a vehicle driven by the suspect pulled up next to Clinkunbroomer’s sheriff’s patrol car while it was stopped at a red light.
The vehicle then drove away and Clinkunbroomer’s car moved forward a little and then stopped. Inmediately the suspect left.
The suspect shotted the deputy with no aparently reason. He died on the hospital according to Luna.
Kevin Salazar was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, his mother told reporters
The suspect’s mother said he was “diagnosed with schizophrenia, heard voices and attempted suicide twice.”
The mother said he was home after the shooting, but did not seem upset.
“My son is mentally ill, and if he did anything, he was not of full mental capacity,” she said.
“They only say that he was the one who shot the agent, but no one says that he has a history of needing mental help,”she said .
According to Luna, the deputy was 30 years old. He served the community “with absolute distinction.” He transferred to the Palmdale station in 2018 and was a field training officer, Luna said.
He added that typically the “best of the best” become field training officers.
“He didn’t deserve this,” Luna said.
